About our Electrosurgical Instruments range

What's in this range

Six sub-ranges covering the instrument side of electrosurgery: Bipolar Forceps (reusable, US 2-pin connector), European Bipolar Forceps (flat-pin connector), Single-Use Bipolar Forceps, Monopolar & Diathermy Instruments, Bipolar Sealers, Scissors & Clamps and Insulated Gynaecology Instruments & Retractors. Across them there are over 650 reference codes, with most patterns offered in several lengths, tip widths and coatings.

Bipolar or monopolar?

In bipolar electrosurgery the current passes only between the two tips of the forceps, so only the tissue held between them is coagulated. No patient return plate is needed, which makes bipolar the usual choice for neurosurgery, ENT, plastic and microsurgery and for work near nerves. In monopolar electrosurgery the current flows from the instrument, through the patient, to a return plate. It is used for cutting and for coagulating larger areas, and the instrument is insulated so that only the working tip is active.

Coatings and tips

Many bipolar patterns are offered in standard stainless steel, non-stick and ultra non-stick finishes. Non-stick tips reduce tissue sticking and charring, so the instrument needs less cleaning mid-procedure. Tip widths from micro (needle) to 2.0 mm are available on most patterns - specify the tip width when you order.

Cables, electrodes and return plates

The cables that connect these instruments to the generator, plus pencils, electrodes and patient return plates, are in Electrosurgical Units & Accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Do you supply the cable for bipolar forceps?

Yes. Bipolar forceps connect to the generator through a separate bipolar cable. See Electrosurgical Cables in Electrosurgical Units & Accessories and choose the cable by your forceps connector (US 2-pin, European flat or Aesculap-type) and your generator's socket.

What is the difference between US and European bipolar forceps?

The connector. US-pattern forceps have a 2-pin plug, while European-pattern forceps have a flat-pin plug. The instruments do the same job; the cable must match the connector.

Can I order a specific tip width?

Yes. Most bipolar forceps are available in several tip widths, from micro to 2.0 mm. The tip width is added to the reference code, so please specify it when you ask for a quote.
