About the electrode shapes
Blade and knife electrodes are general-purpose for cutting and coagulation. Needle electrodes give fine, precise cutting with less heat spread. Ball electrodes are used for fulguration and surface coagulation. Loop electrodes excise tissue - square and round loops are used in LLETZ/LEEP of the cervix, sized to the lesion - and conization electrodes remove a cone of tissue in one pass.
Tungsten needles
Tungsten has a very high melting point, so a tungsten micro-needle stays sharp far longer than stainless steel. They are used in plastic, ENT, head and neck, and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Shaft size
2.4 mm electrodes fit standard pencils, 4.0 mm electrodes fit European handles and 1.6 mm electrodes fit fine-shaft handles. All loop electrodes are also available with an 8.5 cm shaft. Use them with the insulated specula in Insulated Gynaecology Instruments.
Which shaft size do I need?
Match the electrode to your pencil or handle: 2.4 mm for most pencils, 4.0 mm for European handles and 1.6 mm for fine-shaft handles.
What loop sizes are available for LLETZ?
Square and round loops from 1.0 x 0.4 cm up to 2.5 x 2.5 cm, in T-head and Y-head designs, reusable and single-use.
Why choose a tungsten needle?
Tungsten holds a sharp point much longer than stainless steel because of its very high melting point, giving precise cutting with minimal heat spread.
