What the clinical consensus says

From the published UK recommendations on managing hyperkeratosis.

Treating hyperkeratosis once it has become severe can be challenging, making effective use of adjunctive therapies (such as compression) difficult.
Management of hyperkeratosis of the lower limb: Consensus recommendations. London: Wounds UK; 2015.
If left untreated, or sub-optimally treated, hyperkeratosis can degenerate into a progressive cycle of colonisation, infection, skin breakdown and, potentially, sepsis.
Management of hyperkeratosis of the lower limb: Consensus recommendations. London: Wounds UK; 2015.
Patients are often acutely embarrassed by the physical appearance of their skin, the flaking of the hyperkeratotic scales and the unpleasant odour caused by bacterial or fungal colonisation.

Twist the TenoPrep® to approximately 30 degrees to the skin to allow a gentle scraping action. This gives optimal control for gentle, surface-level scraping.

Begin debridement

Begin debridement

Use a gentle scraping motion to lift and remove loose, devitalised skin or hyperkeratosis from the peri-wound area. Keep the motion parallel to the skin surface to avoid trauma to healthy tissue. Work in thin layers and do not apply excessive force or go too deep. Treatment may need to be repeated depending on the patient's condition.

Assess continuously

Assess continuously
